The Liverpool FC Foundation were proud to represent the club at an international conference in Cairo this week to discuss how women and girls can be empowered through sport.

The high level event, which was hosted by Premier Skills and the British Council, was set up to discuss and provoke action in order to use sport as a tool to inspire women and girls to pursue positions of leadership and challenge barriers to equal opportunities.

The Liverpool FC Foundation delivers a successful women and girls football programme that engages with 14-25-year-olds in 12 community hubs each week across Liverpool.

Andrea Cooper, head of the Liverpool FC Foundation, attended the event on behalf of the charity, which also welcomed delegates from Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Kingdom.

She said: "The conference provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the great work that we currently undertake with women and girls in Liverpool and beyond to help them feel empowered.

"It also enables us to put further plans in place for the future to continue to provide sporting opportunities for women and girls and challenge barriers to equal opportunities."

Some of the event's key speakers included the Egyptian minister of state for youth and sports, the Sudanese minister of Khartoum state for youth and sport, the Tunisian director general of sports at the ministry of youth, sport, women and family affairs and the chief executive of the British Council.

This is the first time that the three countries have worked together to effect lasting change in the area of female empowerment through sport and it is hoped that the networks and friendships forged through the event will lead to future knowledge sharing and collaboration to address shared challenges.

Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, added: "In the UK, the Premier League and our clubs work hard to improve the lives of young people in their communities. We hold a strong commitment to engage girls through a variety of programmes, with over 150,000 girls getting involved in the past year alone.

"Given our international reach, it is only right that we instil these objectives through the Premier Skills global programme, which is why it is particularly pleasing to see our partners from Egypt, Tunisia and Sudan working together to bring about lasting change and promote female empowerment through sport."
