Jordan Henderson hailed the resilience of his Liverpool teammates after captaining the Reds to a hard-fought 2-0 win over Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Reds took the lead in the game through Philippe Coutinho, who picked up possession in the third minute and unleashed an unstoppable drive, which swerved beyond Fraser Forster and in off the crossbar.

Liverpool were forced to weather a Southampton storm on the south coast, especially throughout the first half of the encounter as Ronald Koeman's side launched numerous dangerous attacks in the teeming rain.

However, the visitors held firm, with the likes of Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet coming to the fore defensively to keep the hosts at bay.

Then, in the 73rd minute, Raheem Sterling latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area and steered the second goal of the game beyond Forster to the sheer delight of the travelling Kop.

"It was a big win," Henderson told Sky Sports from the tunnel following the final whistle. "We knew coming here would be difficult because they are a good side and they have shown that all season.

"We knew we had to be at our best and work very hard, first and foremost. With the quality we have, we know we can hurt teams going forward.

"I thought from the defence, right through the team, we were outstanding today. It was a perfect away performance, really."

Skrtel, meanwhile, was a rock at the back for Liverpool as he flung himself in the way of danger and helped fight for a fifth consecutive league clean sheet away from home, something the Reds last achieved in 1985.

"It was hard because, as we knew before the game started, they are a good side," reflected the Slovakian. "So we came here and most of the time we were defending.

"But I think we've done well, scored two goals and got the three points, which was massive for us.

"It was what we wanted. We've got the game in the Europa League now [against Besiktas] and then another big game against Manchester City, so we wanted to win to get confidence and we got that, so we can be happy."

While the triumph took Liverpool to within a point of Southampton, it also helped the team make up ground on Manchester United in fourth position, after the Red Devils were beaten at Swansea City on Saturday.

Rodgers' side also leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur into sixth place in the Barclays Premier League standings - but while Henderson is pleased with the progress, he insists the sole focus is on his side collecting points.

"Obviously it's a good weekend for us, but the most important thing is that we win and we keep winning and we just concentrate on what we need to do," he said. "The rest will take care of itself. Overall, we're delighted with the performance and result."
