'Phil can be a Brazilian great'
John Aldridge watched Philippe Coutinho net a goal-of-the-season contender during Sunday's win at Southampton in his local pub – and believes it was a sign that Liverpool's No.10 can go on to become a Brazilian great.
The 22-year-old, who has won back-to-back official Standard Chartered Player of the Month awards in December and January for the club, fired the Reds ahead at St Mary's with a stunning strike from distance that paved the way for what could ultimately prove a crucial three points.
Aldridge is a big fan of Coutinho and he has backed him to get even better as Liverpool eye silverware this term.
"Liverpool's win against Southampton at St Mary's was massive. You couldn't fault the commitment of the players, they fought really hard and got the three points," said Aldridge.
"I'm absolutely over the moon with the win and the goal from Coutinho was 'a worldie'.
"I was actually in the pub watching it and as soon as he looked to shoot I was saying 'No' but I soon changed my mind!
"He's been threatening that for a while and got a great goal away at Bolton in the FA Cup as well, though he knows he needs to get on the end of more things in the box as well.
"He can go on to become a Brazilian great, we know he's got the ability and I'm delighted for him."
Brendan Rodgers' charges now head back to the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul as they take a one goal lead into the second leg of the Europa League last 32 tie with Besiktas.
Aldridge is expecting an intimidating atmosphere but has backed the Reds to get through the tie and add their name into the pot for Friday's last 16 draw.
He added: "I think the Besiktas fans were the loudest I've heard at Anfield. I've played quite a few games in Turkey so I know what it will be like against Besiktas on Thursday.
"It will be volatile and the referee and the players are going to have to deal with that.
"They were a very defensive, solid side but they will have to come out and play.
"Yet if we score they need three and they will be wary of that so how do they approach it?
"They certainly can't sit back and watch Liverpool play in my view and that may suit us. Our away form is terrific after all.
"I think we are going to need a goal to go through, and I think we can get one and progress to the last 16."
