Brendan Rodgers insists he is 'quite relaxed' about the prospect of Raheem Sterling signing a new contract with Liverpool.

The manager remains confident the Reds will reach an agreement with the 20-year-old that will see him commit his long-term future to the club.

Addressing journalists at his pre-Swansea City press conference at Melwood, Rodgers said: "There's nothing new to report on it. I am quite relaxed about Raheem's situation - he's not going anywhere in a hurry. He has still got this year and another couple of years to go on his contract.

"I think it's quite obvious if you look at Raheem's situation - anyone who has the bests interests of Raheem will see that Liverpool Football Club at this stage for him is the best option for his career.

"He's just turned 20 in December and he's made 118 appearances in that time, which is a remarkable amount for a club of this size for a young player to be given that opportunity.

"He's made it clear himself he loves being here and for any young player, I think he was quoted as saying, this is the best place to develop.

"That makes me quite relaxed about the situation. I am sure the club and his representatives will find the solution for that.

"We have the track record here of developing talents, bringing them through and giving them the opportunity. There'll be more of those players like Raheem that will get the opportunity."

Reporters at the club's training complex asked Rodgers whether such negotiations with Sterling and Jordan Henderson could prove a distraction for the players.

The boss replied: "The players are working well, they're concentrated, which is the most important thing, and that side of it they have to leave to their representatives and the club. We'll just focus on the football.

"The two players mentioned are [good at separating the football side from the business side]. It's never easy, but there are players in Leagues One and Two who are working on six-month contracts and one-year contracts. It's a lot more insecure at that level than what it is at this level, so I am sure they'll cope fine knowing they've got two-and-a-half years left on their deals.

"These are two players the club wants to ensure are here for the future. The model of this football club is to develop the talent and create world-class players, it's important we keep those - especially when they're here already.

"It's something the club is working hard to do."
