Dietmar Hamann believes Emre Can's multi-functional style has enabled him to flourish in his first season in English football – and feels he can develop similar leadership qualities to Steven Gerrard.

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet in recent weeks having reverted from a midfield role to a part of the Reds' back three.

Can's attitude and performances on the pitch have caught the eye of compatriot Hamann, who cites him as a key component in Liverpool's 2015 resurgence.

He said: ''When I watched Emre Can play for Bayer Leverkusen last season, one of his stand-out qualities was the ability to perform a number of different roles.

''That versatility has been demonstrated again here at Liverpool. And not only has he done different jobs for the team, he's done each task very well. I would go as far as saying his performances have been one of the reasons why the team has climbed the table.''

It was as a second-half substitute at Burnley on Boxing Day that Can was first deployed in defence for Liverpool - and the No.23 hasn't looked back since.

Hamann expects he may ultimately revert back to his traditional midfield position in future, but insists his versatility is huge testament to his character.

''Long-term, I see Emre Can operating as a central midfielder," he added. "For now he's doing a fine job where he is. Being versatile is a great asset in the early stages of your career.

''Some players aren't comfortable with switching roles. It's just not for them and they'll tell the manager that. Others will go out and give it their best because they know it's a chance to get in the starting XI.

''Any chance to play in the Liverpool team - even if it's not your preferred position - has to be grabbed.''

Hamann was also quick to praise Can's influential qualities, likening them to the leadership traits of Gerrard.

He said: ''Can is similar to Gerrard. You won't see him screaming at players.

"Instead, he just gets on with his job of playing well and helping the team win, no matter which role he is asked to perform.''
