It's a day of celebration for Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler today as the Kop hero turns 40.

Reds fans will want to wish the former striker a very happy birthday for 183 reasons - the number of goals he scored for the club - and also because he was a local lad that lived the dream, growing up in Toxteth before gracing the Anfield pitch.

He exploded onto the scene in the second leg of a League Cup tie with Fulham in October 1993, scoring all five goals in the game, becoming only the fourth Liverpool player to achieve that feat at the age of 18.

It was to prove an example of things to come, as Fowler scored a hat-trick against Southampton in just his fifth league appearance for the club.

Explosive bouts of scoring became Fowler's trademark as he scored the quickest hat-trick in Barclays Premier League history against Arsenal in 1994.

Fowler's lust for goals seemed a reflection of his personality, as his popularity grew with fans who saw the Scouser having the time of his life playing in a Liverpool shirt and viewed him as one of their own.

Roy Evans' team played with an attacking verve that meant that even if they couldn't quite bring a league title back to L4, they were always entertaining to watch. Fowler was more so than most - scoring 18 goals in his first season in the side, and 30 goals in each of the next three seasons, 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97.

He also had a spell as captain of the club in the historic treble season when Liverpool won the Worthington Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup - scoring in two of those finals.

After a short spell away, Rafael Benitez brought Fowler back to his spiritual home when he returned to the club for a second spell in 2006.

A goalscoring genius who will never be forgotten by the Kop, happy 40th birthday Robbie.
