Having each represented both Liverpool and Newcastle United, it's no surprise that Alan Kennedy and Terry McDermott are keenly looking forward to the sides' latest clash tonight.

Brendan Rodgers' Reds welcome John Carver's Magpies to Anfield determined to recover from successive defeats in the Barclays Premier League in recent weeks.

This fixture has served up some of the stadium's finest encounters in the modern era, not least the pair of thrilling 4-3 victories in the hosts' favour during the 1990s.

Kennedy told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's always a classic, it always dreams up the Kevin Keegan era - when there were 4-3s and everybody was scoring goals. It was a wonderful game.

"Newcastle always try to entertain and I believe there'll be plenty of goals in the game."

Liverpool enter the meeting buoyed by having qualified for the FA Cup semi-finals last week, with a trip to Wembley set in the schedule for Sunday.

Conversely, Newcastle have been struggling in the division and travel to Merseyside on a run of four consecutive reversals.

"Newcastle are hurting from getting beat by Sunderland," said McDermott. "I know John Carver and they are badly bruised, so it might be a good time to be playing them to be fair.

"If Liverpool can get a win under their belt tonight, there's no reason why they can't win five out of the next six games and see where it takes them."
