Column: Many twists and turns ahead
In his latest column Liverpool Ladies' manager Matt Beard previews the return of the Women's Super League as his side travel to Chelsea on Sunday and the form of recent capture Asisat Oshoala.
We haven't played a game since April 1 and it goes without saying the girls can't wait to get going again. Our first win of the season over Birmingham City was important and hopefully that will kick-start our season. I've always been confident about our group because we have a lot of exciting young players and it was always going to be a tough start. Looking at the other results in the league so far there has been a lot of teams beating one another. If you look at Birmingham, they nearly won the league last year and they currently sit with one point from their opening two games. I think there will be plenty of twists and turns as the season goes on.
A lot of people were talking about the display of Asisat Oshoala against Birmingham. She is a fantastic talent and is a young player with plenty to learn. I don't want to single one player out from that night because from one to eleven we were fantastic but Asisat took her goal well and then made a great assist. I have no doubt that she will get better and better as the season goes on.
We now turn to games against Chelsea and Manchester City, which are both tough on paper but games we can look forward to. They are not defining games but I've always said we need to go into the break mathematically still involved at the top of the table because we are generally stronger in the second part of the season. We head to Staines Town to face my old club Chelsea on Sunday and they have had a good start to the season, reaching the Women's FA Cup semi-final. The players they have brought in have improved their strength in depth and I've seen their first two games were they have been really impressive. It will be a tough game for us but we have confidence in our own ability.
Katie Chapman is playing regularly again for Chelsea and she is a world-class player. Last year she was injured in the pre-season and before that, she had her third child. She got stronger as the season went on and with a full pre-season under her belt you can see she is hitting top form. I worked with Katie at Charlton and she is also back in the England squad. We will also face Gemma Davison who played a key role in helping us win our second title last season. Gemma is a fantastic talent who was fantastic for us last year, but we can't be too concerned about Chelsea as it's down to us and what we do on the day.
On Wednesday I took the squad to the Hillsborough Memorial service at Anfield which was an incredibly emotional day. It hits home to you what happened at Hillsborough and I am just grateful that I can be part of this club and pay my respects to the fans who lost their lives and support the families. The 96 are always in our thoughts as no matter what level you are at when you play for Liverpool Football Club, when you put that shirt on you always think of the flames on the crest.
Thanks for your support as always.
Matt
