Rush: I might give myself five minutes!
Ian Rush admits he might not be able to resist the lure of pulling on a red shirt once again when he manages the official Liverpool FC Legends team for the first time against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu Stadium next month.
The likes of Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and Craig Bellamy will take to the field once again as part of the first-ever legends team set up by the club.
The match with the Spanish giants takes place on Sunday June 14 and supporters will be able to watch the game live on LFCTV.
Rush, who will be the manager of the Legends team, told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's very exciting. We know that there's been loads of Liverpool legends in the past who have played games, but for Liverpool Football Club itself to put its name to it is something special.
"I think it's great, not just for the players involved, but for the supporters and everyone - and what better chance than to go to Madrid? It's an incredible stadium and it's going to be absolutely fantastic.
"I never got the chance to play there. I've watched Juventus there and the atmosphere is amazing. The stadium is incredible even when it's empty, so imagine what it's like when they are thousands of people in there!
"We know Michael [Owen] and Macca [Steve McManaman) played there on a regular basis but some people haven't and for them to say they have played at the Bernabeu will be something incredibly special for them as well."
Asked if he will bring himself onto the field to make an appearance, Rush added: "I've had a good think about it. I've been trying to get myself fit and, if we are winning, I might just get changed and give myself five minutes!
"If we are losing 3-0 I don't think you'll see me coming on! But being the manager it would be great. I'll just have to wait until they get tired around 80 minutes.
"The most important thing is these players enjoy themselves and it might just be in the final five or 10 minutes that I enjoy it myself!"
The club's all-time record goalscorer believes the game represents a wonderful opportunity for the stars of the club's illustrious past to experience that buzz of putting the Liver Bird on their chest once again.
Rush said: "You only realise when you finish playing because very rarely do you get the chance to go back again.
"So when you finish playing you look back and say 'how good was that playing for Liverpool, with the support that they had and the atmosphere'.
"I think it's all about the dressing room banter. When you finish playing that all goes, so when you get the chance to come back again and play in a legends game it brings back old memories.
"The hardest thing will be picking the 11 to start the game because I'm sure everyone will want to start."
All proceeds raised from the fixture will be donated to the Real Madrid Foundation, which develops and delivers social and cultural awareness programmes both in Spain and overseas.
The funds will be used to help children from the programme 'Promoting School Success', which is delivered by the Spanish Red Cross under the slogan 'Your ticket, their future.'
The return game, which is planned to take place at Anfield at a later date, will raise funds for the Liverpool FC Foundation.
All of the proceeds raised from the return leg will help the Foundation to deliver a range of initiatives that inspire people from all walks of life to make positive change happen for themselves and their communities.
Rush said: "The most important thing is the foundations. Liverpool have got a foundation as well but at the moment it's the Real Madrid Foundation we will be playing for, and the most important thing is to make money for them."
Liverpool famously beat Real Madrid in Paris to win the European Cup in 1981, so how confident is Rush a repeat result could be on the cards?
"You've got to be confident," he stated. "At the end of the day they've got some great players and they have the home advantage but we love it when our backs are to the wall.
"The fitness will come into count and we might need more than the 11 players, but we're looking forward to it and the important thing is entertainment.
"Of course we want to win but at the end of day we want the players to come off the pitch saying we played at the Bernabeu, we had a great time, it was great entertainment and everyone comes off a winner."
Picking a starting XI for the game will be a tough dilemma, Rush believes, but his good friend and fellow club ambassador Robbie Fowler has been urging him to select him as the No.9 to lead the attack.
Asked to divulge whether Fowler's powers of persuasion are working, he added: "Well, you never know? He's been a fantastic player and if he keeps himself fit, I'll think about it!
"When I look at the players that have been selected it's going to be not so easy for me to pick the team, but it's a great privilege to see some of these great players in action."
Tickets for the game are priced at €5, €10 and €15 and will be available to purchase from http://www.realmadrid.com/entradas
