There was joy for Liverpool's Academy youngsters as they won the prestigious Volksbank Cup in the Stemwede International tournament in Germany on Sunday.

Neil Critchley's U19 side beat local side FC Nurnberg 6-5 in a dramatic penalty sudden death shootout after the final had ended in a 1-1 draw. Sergi Canos had netted in normal time.

During the tournament the young Reds played five games. Two 1-0 wins over Werder Bremen and Malaga saw them qualify for the last four and top the group, before they lost their final game 3-1 to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Critchley's side beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the semi-final before the final victory over FC Nurnberg.

The likes of Cameron Brannagan, Canos and Sheyi Ojo were in the Liverpool side.

Brannagan was named player of the tournament while stopper Ryan Fulton was named as the best goalkeeper.

Reflecting on the victory, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was brilliant to see the lads celebrating with the trophy at the end and they thoroughly deserved it.

"It was a special moment for these lads because it was their first tournament win as a group and you could see how much it meant.

"It has been a brilliant experience for the lads and very rewarding."
