The entire Liverpool squad will be hurting from a chastening end to the season at Stoke City and will be desperate to put things right as soon as possible, according to John Aldridge.

The Reds dropped to sixth place in the Barclays Premier League on the final day of the 2014-15 campaign as they were beaten 6-1 by the Potters at the Britannia Stadium.

Aldridge believes the players will carry the pain of that scoreline with them throughout the summer months.

But as a result, the former Anfield striker expects a response when the new season gets underway in August.

"I'd like to think for a lot of the players, that won't go away for a long time," he said.

"Pre-season will help but certainly when you get to the first game of next season, that is one game that I could not wait to come along to make amends and put right.

"For Liverpool to get beat 6-1 is unthinkable and if you're part of that side you want to atone as quickly as possible.

"The fans have got to live on that result for a long time and it really hurts if you've got any feeling for Liverpool Football Club."

Liverpool's chances of improving on the last campaign will surely be aided by the arrival of Belgian striker Divock Origi.

The 20-year-old agreed to move to Anfield in July of last year but was immediately loaned back to Lille, for whom he scored nine goals last term.

Aldridge is hopeful the young forward can shine in the Premier League with help from Brendan Rodgers.

"We've bought him very young. He has potential," he added.

"I saw him in the World Cup last year when he did particularly well for a young kid - he kept [Romelu] Lukaku out of the side with [Christian] Benteke injured. He did himself proud.

"I spoke to a lot of people about him and Simon Mignolet really rates him, so I think it's 'watch this space' really.

"He's strong, powerful, quick and he has scored goals. He's going to be one of those players who won't start every game but he'll be involved in 50-60 per cent, coming off the bench or starting games.

"But he is one you're looking for the future to be a star.

"Belgium are a very good football side and if any coach or manager puts him in ahead of Lukaku, it tells you something.

"Hopefully Brendan can nurture that and we will see the best of him next year, whether it's as an impact player or he starts a lot of games and scores one in every three games."
