Jason McAteer has hailed Liverpool's early summer signings Danny Ings and James Milner, insisting both players can make a big contribution at Anfield next season.

Subject to medicals, the pair have agreed to join the Reds on July 1 after their contracts expire at Burnley and Manchester City respectively.

Former Republic of Ireland international McAteer believes both will prove to be shrewd acquisitions during the 2015-16 campaign.

On the signing of two-time Barclays Premier League winner Milner, he said: "James is a hard-working player. [He has] plenty of experience now at club and country. He knows what it takes to win things.

"That desire is still there, he'll still want to win things and he feels that he can do that at Liverpool.

"I was quite impressed by the fact that he felt he wanted a new challenge and he feels that Liverpool is the club that can fulfil that challenge for him and bring silverware.

"He's got confidence, obviously, in what the manager said to him and he feels that was the right move for him.

"I'm sure there were plenty of teams in for that kind of player. He's a top, top professional, lives his life the right way, prepares the right way, and I think he'll bring a lot to the squad and the team."

Of Ings, who will represent England U21s at the European Championships this summer, he added: "[He's a] good young player.

"It was always going to be tough at Burnley, chances created it was always going to be hard for a team in that position all season.

"Fair play to them, they tried to play their style of football but it just wasn't good enough and I think it took its toll because they got relegated.

"But Danny was probably, in the second half of the season, one of the bright lights, certainly in Burnley's squad - and looking around at strikers that are for sale, good young talents, then Danny would be up there."
