Steven Gerrard expects James Milner to arrive at Liverpool next month with the ideal blend of experience and hunger to make a smooth transition into the team.

The Reds have agreed a deal to sign the hard-working England international on a free transfer from Manchester City on July 1, subject to a medical.

Milner lifted two Barclays Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his five years at City, and has won more than half a century of caps.

Despite that proven track record and vast experience, Gerrard believes the 29-year-old will be keen to show his worth all over again for a new set of fans.

"He'll bring a vast majority of experience," the departing Reds captain told Liverpoolfc.com. "I think it's a very safe signing in the fact that he's won things.

"He's a proven winner - I think he's still hungry. I know he's a very fit boy, very professional and he won't let anyone down. I know James very well and he'll be very eager to come and prove to Liverpool fans that he's good enough to be in the XI.

"So that made sense - we got him on a free transfer as well, so really happy with that one."

Milner has been playing Premier League football for more than a decade now, making an incredible work ethic and level of fitness his calling card around the country.

That's complemented by an eye for the creative pass or finish, though, and Gerrard sees no reason why the Englishman can't settle into Brendan Rodgers' side immediately.

He added: "He'll settle in very quickly. He's used to the league, he's very experienced at domestic level and a very experienced international player.

"I think he'll bring energy to the midfield, he's a good passer, he's safe in possession. I'm very confident he'll slot in very nicely and he'll adapt to Brendan's way of playing very quickly.

"I can picture him now with Lucas [Leiva], Joe Allen and [Jordan] Henderson and I can see them doing a good job."
