Emre Can has insisted he joined Liverpool to add to his medal collection - not just to secure regular first-team football.

The versatile German made 40 appearances for the Reds in his debut season in England following a summer switch from Bayer Leverkusen in his homeland.

The campaign ended without silverware, though, as Brendan Rodgers' side fell at the semi-final stage of both the FA Cup and League Cup.

Can's personal development will continue over the summer as he takes part in the European U21 Championship with Germany in the Czech Republic.

Ahead of his country's opening fixture against Serbia on Wednesday, the 21-year-old spoke of his desire to start picking up trophies at Anfield next season.

"I didn't just come to Liverpool to play football," he said.

"I want to win trophies. Therefore, I want to win one first with the U21 team."

Can could come up against some familar faces should both Germany and England progress beyond the group stages and meet in the knockout rounds.

The Frankfurt-born starlet is wary of the likes of Harry Kane, Saido Berahino and future teammate Danny Ings, having seen them up close last term.

"It's very good, what I've experienced in Liverpool," he continued.

"The work with youth players in England is very good. England U21s have a really good team too and are favourites. Therefore I hope they don't play us."
