There was disappointment for Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino on Saturday night as Brazil were knocked out of the Copa America by Paraguay on penalties.

The Reds pair both started the quarter-final clash in Concepcion, looking to combine in attack, as they will at Anfield next season following the signing of the latter earlier this week.

Robinho put Brazil ahead on the quarter-hour and they were still on course for the last four when Firmino was withdrawn on 69 minutes.

But Derlis Gonzalez converted from 12 yards just three minutes later to level the contest at 1-1 and ultimately force a penalty shootout.

Brazil trailed 3-2 by the time Coutinho stepped up for their fifth attempt and the Liverpool No.10 found the target to briefly restore parity.

Gonzalez had the last say, however, successfully scoring from the spot again to send Paraguay through and ruin the hopes of Coutinho, Firmino and country.
