On this day in 2000, Michael Owen grabbed the fifth hat-trick of his career as he hit a first-half treble against Aston Villa.

The striker had already put Gerard Houllier's team 2-0 up by the 12th minute and, with just over half an hour gone, he grabbed his third of a one-sided Premier League encounter.

The Reds went on to win the game 3-1, with Steve Stone notching a consolation goal for the Villans late on.
