A rueful Kolo Toure insisted Liverpool can still be confident of reaching the Europa League knockout stages, providing they demonstrate a more clinical approach than with FC Sion.

The Reds were ahead against the Swiss side with just four minutes on the clock at Anfield on Thursday, Adam Lallana sweeping home from Divock Origi’s delivery into the area.

But the travellers struck back through Ebenezer Assifuah in the first half and the home team could not take advantage of the numerous chances they subsequently created.

It therefore ended in a 1-1 draw on Merseyside, leaving Brendan Rodgers’ charges with two points in Group B following the same scoreline in their opener at Bordeaux.

“When you play at home and create chances, if you score them and it’s 2-0, the game is different,” Toure told Liverpoolfc.com post-match.

“But when you miss chances, they have decent players – that’s why they are in the Europa League – and you expect them to do well as well.

“It was a soft goal. We controlled the game very well. But they had one chance and scored. At the moment, it’s going against us. I hope that will change.

“We had a chance to kill the game at 2-0, calm the game and control it. But we didn’t make it and that kept the other team in the game.

“In games like that, you have to give everything – from the strikers to the defenders – and fight and score goals and defend for your life. It’s as simple as that.”
