Ian Rush has paid his own personal tribute to Howard Kendall following the sad news on Saturday morning that the Everton hero had passed away at the age of 69.

The legendary Liverpool striker insists the whole of football will mourn the passing of a true great of the game.

Kendall is widely considered to be the greatest manager in Everton’s history having led the club to two league titles, one FA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup, and Rush admits he will miss him greatly.

“He was an absolutely incredible character,” said Rush.

“It says everything about Everton Football Club because he was a great player for them and a great manager, and he will be sadly missed because he is one hell of a character, not just at Everton but all around Liverpool as well.

“When you speak to Neville Southall, Kevin Ratcliffe or Peter Reid they all say he made them, because that’s what he was about.

“They had a great team spirit [at Everton] which is what it was like when Kenny [Dalglish] was in charge of Liverpool.

“We both had great team spirit and I put that down to the managers - he actually tried to sign me for Everton and Sheffield United.

"He was an absolutely fantastic character and he will be sadly missed, not just at Everton Football Club but in world football as well."
