Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has paid tribute to Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger ahead of Wednesday evening's Anfield meeting between the two clubs.

The Gunners go into the midweek Barclays Premier League encounter having won five of their last six league matches to leapfrog Leicester City at the summit.

Speaking at a press conference to preview the clash, Klopp hailed Wenger as one of the best in business, but insisted he is relishing the challenge of taking on the Frenchman's team.

“My respect [for him] goes up day by day,” the manager said. “It’s really intense to work in the Premier League, especially in a team with international matches too. He always had my biggest respect but now it’s a little bit bigger since I’ve been here.

“It’s a really brilliant job what he has done for about 19-and-a-half years. He’s a high quality manager, one of the best in the world for sure.

“It’s really rare that you can do this - but he has. He’s a football maniac in the best understanding.

“It's always a challenge to play against him but I’m looking forward to it.”

During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Klopp faced Wenger four times in the Champions League but he insists that experience will not matter ahead of the pair's latest meeting

He added: “We had different results, all possible results in football - winning away, losing at home, drawing away and at home.

“One thing was always the same - it’s always a good football playing team, that’s for sure.

“It’s not easy but it’s possible [to beat them]. I think we should not compare too much, or talk too much, about my personal experiences against Arsene Wenger teams.

“The players have that experience against Arsenal, I have my experience against Arsenal but in the end I think we should find a present plan for this game. For this we have to make decisions about the team and the starting line-up.

“In this moment, we are really looking forward to it. We’re excited, it’s a good moment. Wednesday, Anfield, it’s good.”
