Jürgen Klopp today explained why it is standard procedure for Liverpool to keep an eye on the transfer market when quizzed about his plans for the remainder of the January window.

The German has sealed deals for two recruits so far this month, snapping up midfielder Marko Grujic in a permanent move and taking defender Steven Caulker on loan until the end of the season.

At the manager’s pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Norwich City, he was asked for an update on transfers with just over a week left to do business.

Klopp said: “It’s not the perfect moment, that’s how it is. And my opinion didn’t change. But, of course, we have to watch the market and we have to think about what makes sense for us now, plus for the summer.

“And if we find a solution that fits for both transfer windows, winter and summer, a player who could help us as soon as possible, then of course we would try it. But that’s all.

“It was a little bit different with Steven Caulker, but since he has been here he has done really well. We gave him 90 minutes with the U21s in the cup game at Leeds. He was good, I saw the match, so he is in a good way.

“But he has never played with the team together. Now we are in a training moment where we try to help him feel more comfortable in the situation because his last game was six weeks ago. He is not in a real rhythm, that’s always the problem.

“But I always said we’ll watch the market and we’ll see if something happens with a few days to go. That’s it.”

The boss continued: “Nothing has changed in my mind or my opinion.

“If there’s a good player who could help us and we see a longer time to work together, not only for three games and then all the others come back, then we’ll think about it. That’s all.

“Maybe we’ll do something. If it is possible, we would try to do something we would usually want to do in the summer. That’s all.

“If the situation is OK with the player and price – we shouldn’t ignore this – we think about it, that’s all. That hasn’t changed.”
