Philippe Coutinho is hopeful that a win on Sunday can be the start of something special for him and his Liverpool teammates.

The Brazilian could earn his first trophy with the club in the Capital One Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.

The occasion also provides a chance for manager Jürgen Klopp to earn his debut honour since taking over at the helm last October.

And the attacker believes the Reds can put themselves in the history books by adding to the Anfield trophy cabinet.

"For you to be happy and make history, as every player wants to make, you need to win titles and this can start on Sunday," Coutinho said.

"It's a new team that's been developing and we have many young players, which is good. We also have experienced players so we try to learn every day and I hope it's the beginning of a good period for Liverpool."

Coutinho featured and scored when Sunday's opponents were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium back in November and he hopes the team can replicate their performance that day to deliver a record-breaking ninth League Cup trophy.

The 23-year-old added: "We also had other great matches but we did well in that game, as the manager asked, so we had a great game. I hope we carry on following up what the manager asks so we can improve each time and get good results.

"The most important [thing] to me is to be able to leave with the title and the champions medal. I think that's what we work for each day, so we can leave [Wembley] with the title and that's what is most important."

The playmaker made the move to Merseyside in January 2013 from Inter Milan, where he won the Club World Cup, Italian Super Coppa and Coppa Italia.

However, the No.10 is adamant that lifting the cup in red on Sunday evening would mean more to him personally than his previous medals, after making key contributions on the road to Wembley.

"It would be the most important to me to win a title by taking part in it and playing in the matches," he admitted.

"We [Inter] won a few titles but I didn't feel involved as they'd played the whole year and I arrived and they were in the final and I didn't take part the whole year so I didn't feel much involved. Now for sure it's very important for that reason.

"I'd say it's better here because when I played at Inter Milan they played the whole season and were the champions and then it's the end of the season and I only took part in the final.

"I was on the bench and [even] though I was there, I didn't feel involved because I didn't play in the other matches."

The Reds' last visit to Wembley ended in defeat against Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, despite Coutinho giving Liverpool the lead that day.

He now wants the pain of that loss to spur the team on so this time they leave London as the victors.

"It's a difficult moment because we were so close to the [cup] final and our team went ahead. We made it 1-0 but then the score was turned around and it was a frustrating moment for us but now we have a chance again, so with this new chance I hope we all can give our best so we won't let this chance get away," he added.
