Their last final victory came in 2012 when they defeated Cardiff 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Martin Skrtel and Dirk Kuyt scored the Reds goals.

Jürgen Klopp will become the seventh overseas winning manager in League Cup history if Liverpool can secure victory today. The others are Gianluca Vialli (1998), Gerard Houllier (2001 and 2003), Jose Mourinho (2005, 2007 and 2015), Juande Ramos (2008), Michael Laudrup (2013) and Manuel Pellegrini (2014).

He would also become the sixth Reds boss to lift the trophy after Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Roy Evans, Houllier and Kenny Dalglish.

In all competitions the Reds have won 14 out of 17 penalty shootouts. They have never taken part in three in the same season.

On all five previous occasions Liverpool have scored an away goal in the first leg of a League Cup semi-final they have gone on to lift the trophy - 1981, 1982, 2001, 2003 and 2012. They scored at Stoke this season.

Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany have yet to make an appearance in the competition this season.
