Alberto Moreno will undergo a further scan on Friday to assess whether he can overcome a hamstring injury and feature for Liverpool against Southampton this weekend, Jürgen Klopp has revealed.

The Spaniard was forced out of the 1-1 draw with Manchester United that sealed the Reds' place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday, having pulled up during a training session at Old Trafford 24 hours prior to kick-off.

Results from an initial scan undertaken by the club's medical staff appeared to be positive, but Moreno was unable to shake off the problem sufficiently to feature, with James Milner drafted in as a makeshift left-back instead.

Klopp has no doubt that the robust defender would have played through the pain against United had he thought it possible, and says he could even make a swift comeback at St Mary's on Sunday.

But much depends on the prognosis gleaned from a further assessment at the club's training base ahead of the Barclays Premier League fixture.

"I don't know yet because we had to wait as long as possible to make the scan because a scan in the first moment gives you [only] a little sight and we did it after training at Old Trafford," the manager told reporters at his press conference to preview the fixture.

"We saw nothing in the scan and it was good but Alberto is a player who really ignores pain and he felt a little bit when he tested it so we could not take the risk.

"Today, I don't know when exactly, he will have another scan and it'll be much more clear if there's something or not.

"If there's nothing, maybe we try it for Sunday, but I don't know exactly."
