James Milner is set to fulfil a childhood dream when he captains England from the start for the first time tonight – a moment that will 'mean everything' to the Liverpool midfielder.

The 30-year-old has been confirmed as the Three Lions’ skipper for a friendly meeting with the Netherlands at Wembley.

Having worn the armband for the Reds on 16 occasions at club level this season, the international honour comes as another proud milestone for Milner.

“[It means] everything,” he said at a press conference to preview the game.

“Growing up, you’re desperate to pull on that England shirt; you’re scoring goals for England at Wembley in your back garden.

“To get the chance to lead out your country is obviously a massive honour and something you’ll never forget.”
