We now recall a truly unforgettable European final in Dortmund when a Golden Goal gave the Reds victory.

It was on a whirlwind night on May 16, 2001 that Spanish minnows Alaves put themselves on the map as they gave Gerard Houllier's mighty Reds a scare.

When Liverpool, playing in their first European final for 16 years, went ahead courtesy of goals from Markus Babbel, Steven Gerrard and a Gary McAllister penalty it seemed like the UEFA Cup was on its way back to the Anfield trophy cabinet, but the Spaniards refused to give up and soon had the scores level at 3-3.

Robbie Fowler came off the bench to net what appeared to be a winner, but Jordi Cruyff levelled the game again with a last-minute equaliser.

The tie then went to extra-time and in the most dramatic circumstances possible, McAllister's free-kick was deflected into the net by Delfi Geli and the treble was sealed.
