In their first appearance in a UEFA Cup final, Liverpool put themselves in a commanding position to lift the crown after an impressive first-leg showing at Anfield.

Despite missing a penalty, Kevin Keegan netted a brace in the opening 45 minutes before Larry Lloyd scored the third just after the hour mark.

Ray Clemence then saved a penalty from Jupp Heynckes, with the Liverpool goalkeeper insisting his preparations had worked a treat.

He said: "I watched Heynckes take a penalty in the semi-final on television and decided to dive the same way. The save was a reward for my homework."

Reds boss Bill Shankly was delighted with the performance from his side.

"It was an international-class game," said Shankly. "Really tremendous. I am not making predictions about the second leg, but we have a distinct advantage because we did not give away a goal."
