A frantic five-minute spell ignited Liverpool's hopes of lifting the UEFA Cup for a second time.

After Club Brugge found themselves in a two-goal lead after 15 minutes of play in the first leg of the 1976 final, the Reds had a mountain to overcome.

But with the Kop in full voice, Bob Paisley's team staged a second-half turnaround.

The boss swapped John Toshack for Jimmy Case at the break and, after Ray Kennedy pulled one back in the 59th minute, the substitution proved to be an inspired choice when the latter drew the sides level.

Kevin Keegan - who was to be crowned Footballer of the Year a day later - netted from the penalty spot with 64 minutes on the clock to complete a dramatic comeback.

Goalscorer Case credits the crowd for their role in the special night.

"The Kop and the supporters were magnificent that night," he said. "Throats must have been red-raw with cheering.

"But you know what? I believe those fans liked to see us with our backs to the wall because they knew we could win."
