Five Liverpool players were involved as England beat Australia 2-1 in an international friendly at the Stadium of Light on Friday night.

Nathaniel Clyne, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana started for the Three Lions as they continue to build up to Euro 2016, while Brad Smith was at left-back for the visitors.

It took Roy Hodgson’s side just over two minutes to break the deadlock, with Marcus Rashford on target, and it remained 1-0 for the rest of the opening period.

James Milner was introduced for the second half and Lallana was withdrawn, before England doubled the advantage on 55 minutes through Wayne Rooney’s clinical drive.

An own goal by substitute Eric Dier with a quarter of an hour left to play gave Australia hope in the closing stages but the hosts preserved the lead to take the win.

Hodgson’s team play their final preparation match ahead of the European Championships in France next Thursday, with Portugal the opponents at Wembley.
