Just three days after winning the FA Cup for the first time, Liverpool met Inter Milan in a truly unforgettable European Cup semi-final, first leg in 1965.

After the trophy was paraded in front of the Kop by injured stars Gerry Byrne and Gordon Milne, a crowd of 54,082 created a fever-pitch atmosphere at Anfield.

With Ronnie Moran in at left-back for Byrne, a memorable night was about to unfold.

Roger Hunt fired the Reds into a fourth-minute lead and, although Alessandro Mazzola levelled it up, a brilliant move led to Ian Callaghan making it 2-1.

When Ian St John put the hosts 3-1 ahead on 75 minutes, the roof nearly came off Anfield.

Unfortunately, the second leg at the San Siro has gone down in history for all of the wrong reasons as some highly controversial refereeing decisions saw the Reds bow out 4-3 on aggregate.

Bill Shankly would later admit the display of the Spanish official would haunt him for a long time to come.
