Although the 1991-92 season was a campaign spent mostly on the sidelines through injury, Barnes provided one moment of brilliance to keep Liverpool’s FA Cup dreams alive.

Leading thanks to an extra-time goal from Darren Anderton, it looked like Portsmouth were about to reach Wembley, but with just four minutes left Graeme Souness’s side were awarded a free-kick.

There was only one man to take it and as Barnes stepped up his wonderful effort came back off the post and ricocheted across the face of goal for Ronnie Whelan to score and save the season.

The Reds, with Barnes an injured spectator, would go on to beat Sunderland at Wembley.
