Liverpool kicked off 2014-15 with victory thanks to a hard-fought Anfield win over Southampton.

With Luis Suarez having departed for Barcelona, plenty of supporters' expectations rested on the shoulders of Daniel Sturridge, and the striker certainly made a big impression here.

Raheem Sterling fired the Reds into the lead initially, only for future Red Nathaniel Clyne to level matters with a superb effort in front of the Kop.

But, with 11 minutes to go, Liverpool got the winner when Sturridge beat Fraser Forster to secure a 2-1 victory.
