Simon Mignolet has insisted he welcomes the competition provided by Liverpool's acquisition of fellow goalkeeper Loris Karius this summer.

Jürgen Klopp moved to strengthen his options between the sticks last month as he clinched a deal to bring Karius to Anfield from Mainz.

The 22-year-old arrives on Merseyside having established himself as a top Bundesliga shot-stopper over the course of the past three seasons - and with sights on the No.1 spot.

But Mignolet expects the added pressure on his place in the starting XI to inspire him to reach greater heights.

"It’s something positive, it can only push you on and can only make you better. Competition for places you will always have at the highest level," he said.

"For every place and every position there are enough people who can do the job when needed and that’s what you need to have a good team.

The Belgian also commented on the Reds' schedule for the start of the new Premier League season, which was released on Wednesday.

He added: "I saw [the fixture list] briefly this morning, it’s the same as last year so looking forward to that. But first we focus on the Euros."
