Klavan started his career with local side FC Elva.
He began life in midfield before switching to centre-half.
After moving to Dutch football in 2005 with Eredivisie outfit Heracles Almelo he played at left-back, before moving to centre-half when he signed for AZ Alkmaar.
He also won a league title with the Dutch club.
