No.7: Ian Dennis (BBC Radio 5 Live)
Ian Dennis from BBC Radio 5 Live gives us his thoughts ahead of the new campaign.
Who’ll win the league?
I think at the moment with everything that has gone on I’d have to say Manchester United. They have added quality to every department. Some of the money that has been knocked around is changing the ball park completely in the Premier League. You also have Jose Mourinho in charge of United and he will have a point to prove this season, but I do think this will be the most competitive and open title race we have seen for many years. I genuinely think there is five, maybe six contenders this season – and that doesn’t include Leicester City.
Where will Liverpool finish?
For the BBC I’ve gone for Liverpool in the top four. A first full season under Jürgen Klopp and also the fact that there are no European distractions, I think that Liverpool now can finish in the top four, I really do. Maybe all they are looking for is that consistency and once they find that with the pressing game they have got I think Liverpool can cause teams a lot of problems. With Klopp entering his first full season, I think Liverpool will be able to bridge that gap and get back in the top four.
What do you think of the new additions to the Liverpool squad?
I was a big fan of Georginio Wijnaldum at Newcastle United. I know he didn’t score a goal away from home last season but in the Premier League you look for goalscoring midfielders and I think Wijnaldum will fit that bill. Sadio Mane will take Liverpool back to when they had Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling playing together in terms of the pace on the break. Mane will provide Liverpool with a cutting thrust and he could be a big player this season. The key thing for me that Liverpool have to do is they have got to keep Daniel Sturridge fit. If he stays fit and performs every week then Liverpool have an outstanding talent who can propel them into the top four.
What are the expectations as Jürgen Klopp prepares for his first full season in charge of the club?
I think the expectations are quite high. What they produced last season in Europe gives you an indication as to where Klopp can take Liverpool to. The night against Borussia Dortmund will live long in the memory and I do think Klopp can take Liverpool back to where they belong. Within that expectation there has to be a bit of realism. Look at what Manchester United and Manchester City alone have splashed out this summer and the fact that you struggle to predict which teams will finish in the top four. Liverpool will improve this season, there’s no doubt about that, but so will Chelsea. You cannot afford to stand still in the Premier League because it’s such a competitive beast, but the fact that Liverpool are up there and challenging is testament to the work that Klopp has done.
Surprise package team?
Middlesbrough. The general consensus now is you expect teams when they come up to the Premier League to struggle. Of the three promoted teams, Middlesbrough have done well in the transfer market. I think Viktor Fischer is a great signing. He was being coveted by a lot of clubs in Europe, including many in England. Where they will finish, who knows, but if they comfortably survive I think Steve Gibson and Aitor Karanka will be very satisfied with that.
Relegated?
Hull, Burnley and Watford.
LFC player to watch?
Wijnaldum and Divock Origi. I know Origi missed the last few games of last season through injury but up until that he was showing signs of being a player with his pace and his movement.
