Joe Fagan's treble winners began a new league campaign with a point as they shared six goals with Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The Reds had started the new season by losing 1-0 to Merseyside rivals Everton in the Charity Shield and were without their leader in Graeme Souness.

Jan Molby made his league bow as a result, but it would be the following season before the Great Dane became a Kop hero.

An own goal from Steve Bruce put the Reds in front after just two minutes and, when Kenny Dalglish made it 2-0, it looked like yet another opening day win was on the cards.

However, Peter Mendham pulled a goal back for the hosts before John Deehan had a penalty saved by Bruce Grobbelaar just before the break.

And, within four minutes of the second half, it was 2-2 when Keith Bertschin fired home.

Liverpool looked like they had escaped with the points when Phil Neal made it 3-2 from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, but a fourth spot-kick of the game was to prove decisive, with Mick Channon slotting home in the final minute of normal time.
