After a turbulent 1992-93 campaign, Graeme Souness paraded his big signing Clough from Nottingham Forest - a player the manager saw as the perfect foil for Ian Rush.
And the new No.7 didn't disappoint as he enjoyed an afternoon to remember.
Wednesday's cause wasn't helped when they were reduced to 10 men following a terrible challenge from Carlton Palmer on Jan Molby.
Clough subsequently fired the Reds into the lead with a magnificent effort and he added a second in front of the Kop from close range.
The emergence of a certain Robbie Fowler meant Clough would never get an extended opportunity to play in his favoured role as a striker, but he would still have another golden moment in a red shirt late on that season against Manchester United.
