Liverpool made it a hat-trick of League Cup victories with a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United at Wembley in 1983.

Ron Atkinson's side took a 12th-minute lead when Norman Whiteside turned and fired a shot beyond the reach of Bruce Grobbelaar.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Reds got back on level terms when Alan Kennedy drilled a fine effort past Gary Bailey to make it 1-1.

The winner came courtesy of Ronnie Whelan, the Irishman curling home a delightful effort to send the travelling Kop wild with delight.

Manager Bob Paisley had announced he would be retiring at the end of the season and, encouraged by captain Graeme Souness, he climbed the famous Wembley steps to lift the League Cup.
