Dejan Lovren: It's a good point
Liverpool can consider the point gained from a goalless draw with Manchester City a good one, according to Dejan Lovren.
The Reds’ latest showdown with the Premier League champions failed to match the frantic nature of the four meetings between the clubs last season.
Ultimately, though, they were thankful for a penalty miss by Riyad Mahrez four minutes from full-time that meant Jürgen Klopp’s side took something from a hard-fought encounter featuring limited chances.
“Man City knew they would have a tough game,” Lovren, who came in to make his first league appearance of the season, told Liverpoolfc.com.
“They knew we had won the last three games against them. What we were missing was a goal but there weren’t many chances. They had a penalty at the end, so when you look back it’s a good point.
“Usually it’s a game with many goals. Previously, it was always an interesting game. From both sides, it was good defensively – we were really compact from the beginning – but what we were missing was the goal, of course.
“In the last four games we have been struggling a little bit in front of goal. But nothing will change; we will work hard and I’m really confident in our team. The most important thing is not to concede.
“Maybe it’s a good time now to go to the internationals and to come back with fresher movements and fresher minds.”
The stalemate at Anfield, coupled with Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Southampton earlier in the day, leaves the three clubs tied together on 20 points at the top of the table.
After the forthcoming pause for international fixtures, Liverpool will resume their Premier League campaign at Huddersfield Town.
“We need to keep this race up until the end,” added Lovren. “It will be a tough season, for sure. Hopefully everyone will come back from the internationals without any injuries.”
