Andy Robertson: We were driven to the title by the fans
Liverpool fans' desire to see their team win the Premier League was a constant driving force for the players this season, explained Andy Robertson.
Wednesday night saw Jürgen Klopp’s world, European and now English champions put an emotional end to the club’s 30-year wait for a 19th title as they collected the trophy on the Kop at Anfield.
With the campaign being completed behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporters were unable to attend the long-awaited presentation.
But Robertson dedicated the triumph to Reds fans and revealed how their dreams of Premier League glory were at the heart of the success.
“This hasn’t happened in 30 years for this club, and I think we would have all paid everything that we have to get the fans in tonight. It wasn’t meant to be, but we’ve done it properly and the time will come for the fans to come – because it’s for them,” the left-back told Liverpoolfc.com after the trophy ceremony.
“It’s for every single one of them, it’s for all them that have been through 30 years of hurt and now we’ve produced the trophy that they’ve been waiting for, for so long.
“That’s what it means to all of us, that’s what has driven us forward the whole season. To get that champions sign above us is what it was for.”
Liverpool were mathematically confirmed as 2019-20 Premier League champions on June 25 but had to wait until their final home fixture of the season to get their hands on the trophy and their medals.
On the pitch, they celebrated the historic occasion with an enthralling 5-3 victory over Chelsea, increasing their points tally to 96 after amassing 97 last term.
And then it was over to Reds captain Jordan Henderson, currently sidelined with a knee injury, to perform a fourth shuffle of the past 14 months.
“Last year we had the Champions League, and you get the medal five minutes after you win it. It’s a whirlwind and you’ve got the trophy before you know it,” reflected Robertson.
“This time, because we won it so early, we had to wait, play games, we had to keep competing and we did that. Yeah, the results haven’t been the best but our performances have been decent.
“Today we pretty much summed up Liverpool, why we’re champions, and Liverpool post-lockdown: we gave away three sloppy goals but the five goals we scored were outstanding. That’s why we’re champions, that’s why we’ve won, that’s why we’re so far ahead – now we get the trophy.
“You saw the captain lifting it and it’s so emotional to see him lifting it; he would have given everything to be out there today. Unfortunately, he couldn’t be, but I’m so delighted that he could lift it and it’s a real emotional time for all of us.”
Robertson intends to bask in the possession of a Premier League winner’s medal for a little while at least, but the No.26 already has one eye on next season.
“Maybe a few days around my neck [for the medal]. You never get bored of winning trophies – never, never, never,” he added.
“Medals are to cherish. It’s something that, once you retire, you look back on more but it’s so important that when you get it around your neck to enjoy it.
“Moments like these don’t happen often but we hope to make it more often for this club. If we can do it, the lads are already legends, we will go on to leave a legacy at this club and that’s what we want to do.
“We know every team will improve next year, and it’s about us to be there again, being there 100 per cent again and I’m sure we will be.”
