Pep Segura singled out Jonjo Shelvey for special praise after the midfielder scored a brilliant goal during the reserves' 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Thursday night.

Liverpool's No.33 had an impressive 90 minute run-out and he found the net with an unstoppable free-kick.

The draw means Liverpool Reserves finish their Barclays Premier Reserve League season in third place in Group B.

United took the lead through Nicholas Ajose but Shelvey drew the Reds level. A Joe Cole shot then took a wicked deflection off Nikola Saric to put Segura's side in front. However, Gabriel Obertan levelled when he reacted quickly to net after Oliver Norwood struck the post from a free-kick.

"Shelvey demonstrated his quality and he had a fantastic game," Segura told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"He wants to grow as a player and play for the first team. He was focused and he was a good example for our young players.

"We could have won the game but maybe a draw was a fair result.

"Manchester United played well, sometimes we played well but we were disappointed to concede a late goal."

Segura fielded a strong line-up with Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen, David Ngog and Danny Wilson joining Wilson in the starting XI.

"It was a good experience for the young players to get the chance to play alongside the first team squad players and they will learn a lot from that," he added.

Meanwhile, skipper Andre Wisdom echoed Segura's thoughts and added: "It's always a good experience when you get the chance to play alongside quality experienced players because you can learn a lot from them.

"I enjoyed playing alongside Danny Wilson. He is a great player and we also have a good relationship off the pitch.

"Overall it was a fair result but the lads are disappointed we couldn't keep our 2-1 lead."
