10 years ago: Dortmund delight
It was ten years ago today - on May 16, 2001 - when Gerard Houllier led the Reds to treble glory in Dortmund.
Having already secured both the FA Cup and League Cups, the Reds travelled to Germany to take on Spanish outfit Alaves in the UEFA Cup final.
What followed was a night of pure European drama as Liverpool seemingly took control through early strikes from Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard, only for Alaves to give themselves a lifeline with a goal from Alonso.
Gary McAllister settled Reds' nerves from the penalty spot but the Spanish side were not to lie down and hauled themselves back into the match as two Moreno strikes made it 3-3.
Robbie Fowler came off the bench to net what looked like being the winner before Cruyff netted in stoppage time to level the scores at 4-4 and set up a nerve-shredding extra-time period in which the game could be decided by a Golden Goal.
Thankfully, from McAllister's well delivered free kick from the left, the head of Alaves defender Geli deflected the ball into his own net to hand Liverpool the treble and spark scenes of delight among players, staff and supporters alike.
