Steven Gerrard has given his support to Liverpool Ladies as they bid to climb their way up the Women's Super League table.

The ladies' season resumes this weekend after a month-long break for the World Cup in Germany, and Gerrard met fellow captain Vicky Jones and manager Robbie Johnson to discuss the WSL campaign so far.

"We're all behind the ladies' team and we hope they have a hugely successful season," he said. "It's a really exciting time for women's football and to see Liverpool Ladies take a step up into the Women's Super League this year is something that the club is really proud of."

He added: "Hopefully it will encourage more young girls to get involved in playing football and to show their support for Liverpool Ladies."

Liverpool Ladies face a challenging start to the second half of the season with a Merseyside derby at Everton (July 27), which takes place at Marine FC in Crosby, following the Arsenal game on Sunday.

They have just three points from seven games so far and are bottom of the table.

Jones said: "We can't wait to get back and play after the mid-season break. The first two games will prove a tough test but it's a good measure of where we are at as a team and we're hoping to get good results in both.

"Seeing what a fantastic reception the Women's World Cup received here was a huge boost for all the players and we're hoping as many fans come down to watch us as possible at Skelmersdale.

"We've had great support so far this season and we know all the Reds fans will continue to get behind us and help push us on to success over the rest of the season."
