It was a frustrating day for Liverpool Ladies as they lost 6-3 to Chelsea in a thrilling encounter on Sunday afternoon.

An away fixture against the Women's Super League champions was never going to be easy but things started brilliantly in Staines when Katie Zelem gave the Reds a first minute lead.

The hosts came back and Karen Carney levelled after a superb assist from England star Fran Kirby.

Rosie White then came so close to restoring Liverpool's lead but was denied by a brilliant stop from Hedvig Lidahl.

Despite good pressure from Scott Rogers' charges they were always vulnerable to Chelsea counter-attacks, and the home side then raced into a 4-1 lead before the break.

Kirby fired the hosts 2-1 up before efforts from Drew Spence and Eni Aluko inflicted further damage.

The one big factor this Liverpool Ladies team has is spirit and character and they gave it a real go in the second half.

Caroline Weir quickly pulled a goal back and when substitute Emma Lundh made it 4-3 the Reds sensed hope.

However, Chelsea showed they are not ready to give up their WSL title without a fight and when Kirby and Spence scored again the game was over.
