Scott Rogers' charges enjoyed a 2-0 win over Reading last weekend and go into the clash with Notts County on a five-game unbeaten run.

However, the Lady Pies have been a bogey team of theirs in the recent past – following four defeats in their last four encounters – but Reds midfielder Kate Longhurst says her side have every reason to be optimistic.

“We know that Notts County are a clinical team and that’s something we sometimes haven’t been – if they get chances they will punish us,” she said.

“We need to make sure we limit their opportunities. If they were consistent they’d be right up there, but with the signings [of Jo Potter and Jade Moore] their midfield has strengthened especially and it’s only added to their quality.

“[Defence] was something we needed to focus on because clearly we were conceding too many goals – we worked really hard on it in training.

“If we could get the defence right but still have that freedom going forward, it would be a perfect mix and I think we’ve shown that over the last few games.”

View from the opposition

England ace Moore’s arrival has brought star quality to Notts County and the England midfielder is intent on ensuring her new club fight at the right end of the table – starting with victory over Liverpool.

Moore – and fellow signing from Birmingham Potter – could not crown their FA Women’s Super League 1 Lady Pies debut with victory after defeat to Arsenal last week.

It has left Rick Passmoor’s side in danger of being cut adrift from the top four, making this Saturday’s clash with Liverpool in Widnes all the more crucial.

Liverpool, in fifth, hold a five-point advantage over Notts County – having played two games more – but Moore says her new side have all the tools to unlock a Reds defence that has proven sturdy of late.

“The league is really hard if you’re not in those top two or three spots and challenging for the title, as you end up needing to take points from those sides nearest to you in the standings,” said Moore.

“There are a lot of sides not far above us, and the Liverpool game will be a big one as we want to be fighting it out for that fourth spot.

“It will be a good battle with Liverpool. Going to their ground creates its own difficulties; it is a big pitch and a 3G surface.

“They have a definite advantage up there as nobody else really gets to play on that kind of surface too much, but at Notts we’ve got power and pace up front so hopefully with a big pitch it will suit us.

“Liverpool are a fairly young and inexperienced team in terms of the league so hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

Last time out

The last time the two sides met was earlier this season when the Reds ended up one the wrong side of a five goal thriller.

Ellen White and Jess Clarke gave the Lady Pies a 2-0 half-time lead before Caroline Weir missed a penalty as Rogers' side looked for a way back in to the game.

The visitors were then punished for missing a host of chances as a brilliant solo goal from White made it 3-0 before a late double from Katie Zelem, including a penalty, made the scoreline 3-2.
