Liverpool have stepped up their bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.

That is according to German publication Bild, who claim the Reds are hoping to land the 23-year-old with a £37.6million bid for for his services this month.

The Switzerland international, who has been dubbed the 'next Bastian Schweinsteiger', would surpass the £35m fee Liverpool paid for Andy Carroll to become the club's record signing.

Premier League rivals Arsenal are also keen on Xhaka as Arsene Wenger looks to find a replacement for injured Francis Coquelin before the window shuts.

But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to solve an injury crisis of his own, with 13 first-team players currently on the treatment table.

Xhaka's agent, who is also his father, has confirmed a number of clubs are following his son and has refused to rule out a transfer.

"At the moment I prefer not to say too much," Ragip Xhaka said.

"I can say that several big clubs are interested. Everything is possible, we’re not ruling anything out."
