Klopp considering move for Gabriel Mercado
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is interested in a potential transfer move for defender Gabriel Mercado, according to River Plate president Rodolfo D'Onofriohas.
The German boss watched 29-year-old Mercado play for Argentina as they faced Chile in the Copa America on Tuesday.
Reds fans went into meltdown on social media as Klopp was set beside Gonzalo Higuain but D’Onofriohas confirmed he was scouting Mercado instead of the Napoli striker.
‘Klopp likes him,’ D’Onofriohas told Fox Sports.
‘But for Mercado to go to England, Argentina need to be champions.
‘Winning a title with the national team would allow him to play in England.’
Mercado is most comfortable at right-back or centre-back but can also operate on the right wing so he would be a versatile addition to Klopp’s squad.
