John Arne Riise's excitement over Liverpool return
Former Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise will return to the club next year to complete his coaching qualifications.
The Norwegian defender came out of retirement briefly to play for Indian Super League club Chennaiyin FC in August but he’s now looking towards the next chapter of his career.
Liverpool Academy director Alex Inglethorpe has offered the 2005 Champions League winner the chance to spend some time at Kirkby working with the club’s youngsters and he’s relishing the opportunity.
"Can’t wait for 2017," he tweeted.
"Going to be at the Liverpool Academy while taking my coaching badges. Exciting! Learning from all the great coaches.
"Once a month I will be there and working with great coaches and players. A lot to learn and what better place than Liverpool."
Riise, who made 348 appearances for the Reds, told the ECHO earlier this year that he was keen to pursue a career in coaching and ultimately management.
"I’m starting on the A this summer and then the Pro after that," he said.
"Being involved in football is what matters. The dream is to become a manager. I can’t imagine life without football."
The plan is for Riise to spend five or six days each month at the Academy to pass on his wealth of experience. Former Liverpool centre-back Stephane Henchoz did something similar last year.
