Schalke star linked with Reds move
Schalke defender Benedict Howedes has sent out a come-and-get-me plea amid speculation that Liverpool are interested in signing him this summer.
Howedes, 29, has made 334 appearances for Schalke since breaking into the first-team back in 2007 but is being heavily linked with a move away after being stripped of the captaincy ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
Domenico Tedesco named goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann as the club’s new skipper and Howedes is considering leaving the Bundesliga outfit following six years with the captain’s armband.
Reports in Germany suggest Liverpool are weighing up a move for Howedes and Jurgen Klopp has been handed a major boost after the World Cup winner admitted he would prefer to leave the Bundesliga.
"It is clear that I received enquiries from other clubs," he revealed.
"It is in the nature of the matter that my advisor checks and answers this.
"I have always said that I can rule out a move within the league [Bundesliga] and I can imagine a change abroad."
Howedes is not bitter following Tedesco’s controversial decision, though, and wished the team well – whether or not he remains with them this season.
He said: "I was very happy about the feedback from the club, the coach, the team colleagues and the fans after the match on Saturday."
