Divock Origi set for new Liverpool contract after Champions League heroics

The Reds icon has confirmed he will sit down and talk with Liverpool, after being offered a new contract.

And the club’s recruitment team is increasingly confident the striker will become the latest young star to commit to the club, as they look to tie him up on a long-term deal.

Boss Jürgen Klopp has expressed his total faith in the Belgium international, who has starred in the second half of the season, and produced some absolutely vital goals to prove his finishing quality beyond doubt.

He followed a brilliant Champions League semi-final winner against Barcelona with a stunning finish in the final against Spurs to confirm his status as a cult icon amongst the club’s fans.

But Klopp has been impressed by both his attitude and his strike rate. He has finished the season as the club’s fourth top scorer despite limited opportunities in the early part of the campaign.

His record in Europe has been remarkable, and he has also provided some crucial last-minute goals against the likes of Everton and Newcastle.

All that has persuaded Klopp that Origi can play a bigger role going forward as a high-quality alternative to his frontline, and has also persuaded the club that he deserves a much longer contract.

He only has a year left on his current deal, and initially Liverpool were looking at offering a year’s extension. But his form and attitude - and confirmation of his instinctive finishing - means talks are now progressing over a long-term contract.

Origi is still only 24, and the club is determined to get all its younger players signed up to 2023 and beyond.

The player indicated talks will progress when he said after the final: “There’s an offer for a new contract on the table.

“We will see after the international games, but I think there will be talks with the club.”
