Klopp considers defender move as cover for Robertson
Liverpool are considering triggering Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo’s €50million release clause.
Andrew Robertson cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s prime attacking full-backs last season, contributing 11 assists and playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League winning campaign.
The Scotland international’s understudy, Alberto Moreno, was released earlier this month upon the expiration of his contract and Klopp has been left short of quality back-up for one of his key players.
Sport claim Betis are determined to keep hold of the 22-year-old, who has previously been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United, and will not consider any offers below his full release clause.
Moreno, in part due to Robertson’s durability, made just five appearances in all competitions last season but Klopp is still said to be considering spending a large portion of his summer budget on a player who is unlikely to be a first choice starter.
Liverpool have spent heavily in the transfer market over the course of the last 18 months, recruiting Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk for a combined £143m, but signings are likely to be kept to a minimum this summer in order to maintain the team spirit and unity within a squad that came within a solitary point of a European and Premier League double last season.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have also been linked with a move for Firpo, with Betis also fending of interest from Tottenham and Manchester United in Argentine midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
